Man shot in gang war outside Raipur jail, sparks outrage over security lapses

An alleged violent gang war erupted outside the Raipur Central Jail in Chhattisgarh in broad daylight on Monday, raising questions about the security measures at the jail in the state capital. A man was shot and injured by three attackers, with police stating that the attack stemmed from an old enmity.

The victim, Sahil Khan, was targeted while visiting his brother, an undertrial in a narcotics case. Multiple shots were fired, one of which struck Khan in the throat, leaving him severely injured.

Police investigations revealed that Khan, a habitual offender, was attacked by three assailants identified as Shaikh Shahnawaz, Shahrukh, and Heera. These individuals are reportedly members of two rival gangs engaged in a long-standing feud marked by violent clashes, including previous stabbing incidents.

The incident has sparked intense criticism of jail authorities, accusing them of negligence and failure to ensure security. Eyewitnesses reported that no security personnel were present at the time of the attack, an alarming revelation given the location’s significance.

Adding to the concern was the non-functional state of CCTV cameras, an issue that had remained unaddressed for an extended period. However, jailer Amit Shandaliya declined to comment on the situation.

The accused fled the scene, and officials stated that efforts are underway to trace them.
