Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sawant said that the police have been given full freedom to probe these cases.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said that police investigations into cases of alleged fraud involving land sales, jobs, and financial misappropriation have not uncovered any political links.
Speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sawant said that the police have been given full freedom to probe these cases.
“Cases of fraud related to the sale of land, giving jobs, and financial misappropriation are registered at various police stations. A detailed probe is being conducted. As per the police probe so far, no political involvement has been found in any of these cases,” Sawant was quoted as saying by news agency PTI in its report.
The opposition consisting of Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have accused the government of a cash-for-jobs scam and have called for a judicial probe into the matter.
Opposition leaders criticised the Chief Minister, alleging a cover-up and accusing the police of bias.
Vijai Sardesai, president of the Goa Forward Party, said, “Everybody in Goa knows that the chief minister, who is the home minister, is going all out to give himself a clean chit, saying that there is no political link in this probe. This is a certificate given by caged parrots. Goa Police Department has become caged parrots. They are expert at diverting attention. Everybody knows that people who are arrested have got political links”.
The allegations come amid protests by opposition parties, who claim that the state government is misusing its power to target critics and shield itself from scrutiny.
