Prayagraj, January, 2025 – A significant fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Sector 19, Prayagraj, triggered by successive LPG cylinder explosions. The incident occurred at approximately 4:08 p.m. in the kitchen of the Gita Press camp due to a gas leak. Witnesses reported at least three cylinder blasts, which caused flames to spread rapidly, destroying around 40 huts and six tents.
Thanks to swift action by emergency services, all 25 individuals present in nearby camps were safely evacuated, and no casualties were reported. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the fire department, supported by 45 fire engines and over 200 personnel, managed to bring the fire under control within an hour.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was in Prayagraj reviewing preparations for Mauni Amavasya, visited the site to assess the damage. He commended the rapid response of the disaster management teams and instructed authorities to implement preventive measures to avoid similar incidents. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed concern and spoke with CM Adityanath to ensure necessary support was extended.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a 45-day spiritual festival that began on January 13, has already attracted over 77.2 million pilgrims as of January 18. Despite the fire, the situation was quickly normalized, ensuring that the religious activities continued without disruption.
